St. Patrick’s Day
Saint
Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in
Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17
March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick's Day was
made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed
by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion. On St Patrick's Day it is customary to wear shamrocks
and/or green clothing or accessories (the "wearing of the green"). St
Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the
Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. This story first appears in writing in 1726,
though it may be older.
